The Republican Woman's Club Candidate forum offered few surprises until the candidates for county commissioner approached the dias.
The biggest bomb of the night happened when challenger, Diana Fessler said "Jack (Evans) and I differ on one major issue, I am pro-life and Jack is pro-choice!" The comment went unchallenged until after the events closed when Evans was seen confronting Fessler on the accusation. Fessler was heard apoligizing for the statement after Evans told her he is also pro-life and always have been. Fessler, who is term limited as State Representative, touted her 15 years of work at the state level and thought the voters should have a choice from a pool of people in this election.
Commission candidate, Robert Clawson, stated "the county does not need an Industrial Development Department since Troy, Piqua and Tipp City already have departments for this type of thing. They need abolish the department and put new Industrial Director, Jim McGarry, into a County Administrator postition."
Incumbent Commissioner Jack Evans touted his experience as a small business owner, veteran and in local governement and said "I am the only candidate in this election who will continue the team mangement philosophy that was started by Dick Adams, Ozzie Haddad and Ann Baird. My dad always told me, If it isn't broke don't fix it. Well I think you will agree, Miami County Government is not broken and I ask for your vote on March 4th."
79th district State Representatives candidate Richard Adams opponent, Joe LeMaster of Darke County, was a no-show to the event. Adams touted his experience as county commissioner, board of elections member and superintendent of the Upper Valley JVS as reasons for his election. He also stated he wanted to go to Columbus to do or undo what is improtant to you.
The night also included presentations from incumbent recorder, John Alexander and challenger Janet Zelnick, Incumbent Sheriff Charles Cox and challenger Joe Mahan and 5 candidates for the open position of coroner.
